New for 2019-2020! Beyond the Bag Challenge

We’re excited to announce that the Plastic Bag Grab Challenge is back for 2020 along with some exciting new activities to keep your school/classroom engaged year-round. To celebrate the program's fifth year anniversary, we're excited to go Beyond the Bag!

In addition to the Plastic Bag Grab Challenge in April, we have partnered with Canadian Geographic on a plastic engagement program called 10,000 Changes. The program brings our teacher partners monthly learning modules that explore key themes and concepts connected with plastic use and waste.

Education is a key initiative of 10,000 Changes, and offers a series of learning packages that can be adapted to any grade level (K-12). Utilizing these packages are how participating schools will go Beyond the Bag and kick off the fifth Plastic Bag Grab Challenge campaign.

How Beyond the Bag Works

for Beyond the Bag updates using the form below. Although official registration for the Plastic Bag Grab Challenge 2020 doesn't open until the new year, we suggest registering for updates to stay up to date on when new learning packages are available.

Learn

Each month a new plastics learning module will be available at 10000changes.ca/education. Each package contains an infographic, video, and lesson plan designed to dive deeper into a plastic issue and move towards taking action. As part of Beyond the Bag, participating schools are encouraged to participate in one learning module per month. The first three -- 7 Types of Plastic, Hidden Plastics, and The Plastic We Eat – are now available.

Share

Community engagement prizes will be provided to schools who utilize these learning packages and share their experience on social media using program hashtag #PlasticBagGrab. Schools are encouraged to take part in both the learning packages and annual Plastic Bag Grab Challenge to create a year-long plastics educational campaign.

Plastic Bag Grab 2020

The Plastic Bag Grab Challenge will still run during Earth Month 2020. Stay tuned for more details for the upcoming challenge.

In the meantime, we encourage you to begin participating in the learning packages and share with us how your school is engaging with each module by posting on social media using hashtag #PlasticBagGrab.

About Plastic Bag Grab Challenge

During Earth Week in April 2020, schools are invited to learn and take action on plastic waste by participating in an education and engagement campaign designed to ensure single-use plastic bags in your school community are properly recycled. The Plastic Bag Grab Challenge is an environmental awareness program that engages schools and students on the 3Rs hierarchy - reduce, reuse, recycle - and can be incorporated into existing curriculums.

The challenge is open to all elementary and secondary schools across Canada. Prizes are awarded in each province/territory for participation, community engagement, and social media.
